What is an STI?

STI stands for Sexually Transmitted Infection. They are sometimes called STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases), but STI is the preferred term because it is less stigmatizing.

An STI is caused by a virus, bacteria, or parasite that can spread through oral, vaginal, or anal sex, and sometimes from mother to baby. While some STIs can cause serious health problems, modern healthcare has made them easier to detect and treat.

What if I test positive for something?

Thankfully, there are many safe and effective treatments available for most STIs. If you test positive, a member of our clinical team will review treatment options with you and ensure you are offered the appropriate treatment and/or connect you to care.

What are the tests like?

Once we know what tests make the most sense for you, we will know specifically what samples to collect. The most common tests include a urine collection and/or swabs, and/or a blood draw. For example, for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia, we will likely start with a urine test, as the most common place that Gonorrhea and Chlamydia can be found is the genitals. However, because they can also be passed by oral and anal sex, we may recommend a throat and/or anal swab.

How will I receive my results?

You will be notified by secure email and text message when your results are available.
